It’s that time of year when teachers and librarians begin to release summer reading lists. Our very own Bobbie Pyron has got some great suggestions for middle grade readers, but first we’d like to recommend her unforgettable novel STAY, just released in paperback.
STAY tells the story of newly homeless Piper, whose life is turned upside down when her family moves into a shelter in a new city. While life in Hope House brings challenges, it also brings new friendships, like the girls in Firefly Girls Troop 423 and a sweet street dog named Baby. When Baby’s person goes missing, Piper knows she has to help. But helping means finding the courage to trust herself and her new friends, no matter what anyone says about them—before Baby gets taken away for good. A classic and heartfelt animal tale, STAY proclaims the importance of hope, the power of story, and the true meaning of home.
STAY is a Texas Bluebonnet, Texas Horned Toad Tales, and Kentucky Bluegrass award finalist. And truly an ideal summer read.
We asked Bobbie what’s on her summer reading list. Here’s what she said.
Bobbie’s Summer Reading Recommendations
by Katherine Applegate
Hooray for fans of Newbery Award-winning THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN! Applegate’s new book features Ivan’s buddy, Bob, the smart-mouthed, big-hearted mutt as he journeys to reconnect with his friends from the zoo.
THE LIST OF THINGS THAT WILL NOT CHANGE
by Rebecca Stead
Newbery Award-winner Stead returns with the funny, poignant and utterly authentic story of a young girl dealing with a great deal of change. No one can portray the world of middle graders quite the way Stead can.
by Cynthia Lord
On the last night of summer, Emma goes with her father, who is a game warder, to rescue a wild rabbit caught in a picket fence. After they bring the little bunny home “just for the night,” it becomes clear the rabbit is not wild, and most likely someone’s pet. As with all of Lord’s books, this one is tender and full of heart.
by Terry Lynn Johnson
When thirteen-year-old Karma becomes lost in the Montana wilderness with her falcon and a runaway boy named Cooper, their mettle is tested by vast wilderness, fierce weather, and wild animals. Johnson is a terrific writer of edge-of-your-seat adventure stories rich with natural beauty and engaging characters. You can’t go wrong with any of her books!
